Advisor: Dr. Bastian Bentlage
Research: My general research interest lies in marine ecology and evolutionary biology. My main research project is on the microbial ecology of corals and its effect on coral holobiont physiology. My other projects focus on marine phylogenetics and biodiversity.
About
Current Position: Graduate Student (Fall 2020 - Present)
Previous Education: Bachelor of Science in General Biology & Writing: Professional Writing
Previous Relevant Work: My previous experience was mostly based around scientific editing, communication/design, and education. I came to Guam to gain a unique and rigorous research experience with Dr. Bentlage, and apply my previous experience to our outreach, education, and publishing.
Justin Berg
Advisor: Dr. Bastian Bentlage
Research: At the University of Guam Marine Lab, I am studying the effects that sedimentation have on the coral microbiome. Specifically, I aim to understand how the sediment load in the wet and dry season affect the microbiome of Porites lobata in Fouha Bay, southern Guam.
About
Current Position: Graduate Student (2018-Present)
Previous Education: University of Delaware: Biology (BA) and Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Biosciences
(BS) with Chemistry Minor
Previous Relevant Work: As a pre-veterinarian student, Justin studied the microbiome of ruminants. Later,
he interned with David Vaughn at MOTE Marine Laboratory where he learned to grow corals
using micro-fragmentation. Building on these experiences, Justin will deploy coral
fragments to study the succession of coral-associated microbes (the microbiome) across
an environmental gradient.
Renee Crisostomo
Advisor: Dr. Laurie Raymundo
Research: I am interested in looking into the morphological plasticity of staghorn corals as a direct response to changing environmental factors and how this plasticity may affect/inform coral restoration efforts and decision making.
Star Dressler
Advisor: Dr. Atsushi Fujimura
Research: With a background in oceanography, my research interests remain broad. As an EPSCoR student, my research will work to deepen our understanding of connectivity in coral reef ecosystems. My thesis work will likely involve plankton community dynamics in relation to hydrographic parameters, such as current flow.

Previous Education: B.S. in Biology: Marine Science Concentration at West Chester UniversityRachael Keighan
Advisor: Dr. Peter Houk
Research: I am interested in a variety of different topics including trophic dynamics, fisheries management, and functional ecology. At the University of Guam, I am investigating the ecological role played by species of sea cucumber. I am particularly interested in their role in nutrient cycling and how unsustainable harvest of sea cucumbers may impact reef health.
About
Grace McDermott
Advisor: Dr. Laurie Raymundo
Research: My research focuses on coral responses to bleaching and other stressors through the study of phenotypic traits that confer long term coral reef resilience.
Andrew McInnis
Advisor: Dr. Peter Houk
Research: I am interested in a wide range of topics including ecology, fisheries management, and socioeconomic factors affecting marine environments, particularly coral reefs. I aim to conduct applied science which can be directly used in local and regional management. Here at UOG I will be looking at links between trophic structure of reef fish communities and benthic community composition through Micronesia.
Therese Miller
Advisor: Dr. Bastian Bentlage
Research: I'm interested in looking at the coral microbiome and examining the DNA of bacteria that live in coral tissue and mucus. Currently, my labmates and I are doing a project to test heat stress on corals and whether they can acclimate to the temperature differences.
About
Current Position: Graduate Student (Fall 2020 - Present)
Previous Education: Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida
Previous Relevant Work: I volunteered as an undergraduate research assistant at the Marine Invertebrate Zoology lab at the University of Florida's Natural History Museum. During my fourth year of undergrad, I also worked as a laboratory technician at the State of Florida studying invasive Giant African Land Snails and working on eradicating them.
Claire Moreland-Ochoa
Advisor: Dr. Laurie Raymundo
Research: I am interested in small- and large-scale coral restoration work. I work in the field monitoring outplanting sites and maintaining two coral nurseries which focus mainly on the propagation of staghorn coral (Acropora). My thesis involves studying the threatened octocoral Heliopora coerulea, otherwise known as Blue Coral. This species is important because it is considered a reef-building species and has been proven to be bleaching resistant. I am working on determining if this coral can be used as a restoration coral on Guam through lab and field monitoring and experimentation.
About
Current Position: Graduate Student (2019-Present)
Previous Education: Bachelors of Science from Cornell University
Previous Relevant Work: I was an intern in the Ocean Acidification Program at Mote's International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration in the Florida Keys. This program focused on characterizing the physiological effects of changing ocean pH, as well as temperature and nutrient concentration, on marine organisms found within coral reef and coastal ecosystems. I participated in designing, setting up, and maintaining experiments within the outside ocean acidification experimental water system (OAFTERU) and gained experience in coral and marine organism husbandry. I also learned techniques for measuring and analyzing seawater carbonate chemistry, water quality, and animal physiology (photosynthesis/ respiration, calcification rates, photochemical efficiency

Research: My current study aims to 1) contrast commercial and non-commercial fisheries trends, and 2) map the post-landings geographical distribution of non-commercial catch as driven by social and cultural processes. I hope to generate management recommendations based on results.
About
Education and Previous Work: I received my undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Guam in 2019. After my freshman year, I participated in EPSCOR's summer fellowship program. During this time, I conducted research on Guam's local manta ray population and their unique feeding behavior on fish spawn. I have since then continued to assist in manta ray research here in Guam with Julie Hartup of Micronesia Conservation Coalition. The summer following my junior year, I spent 10 weeks on the Big Island at UH Hilo assessing water quality in Puako as affected by sewage pollution. Upon graduation, I started my job as a sea turtle biologist with the University of Guam Sea Grant, monitoring one of Guam's nesting sites and tagging nesting turtles for population assessment.Monika Salas

Advisor: Dr. Sarah Lemer
Research: Transcriptomic signatures of acclimation in ‘susceptible’ Acropora surculosa and ‘resilient’ Porites rus
Christy Starsinic
Advisor: Dr. Peter Houk
Research: “Examining Predicted versus Observed Reef Resilience throughout Micronesia” Resilience studies analyze the ability of a reef to resist or recover from disturbances such as coral bleaching. My research is investigating how snapshot predictions of the resilience of coral reefs in Micronesia compare to trends observed over a longer term.
