Guam Philosophy Network
The Philosophy Program at the University of Guam is dedicated to fostering a community of thinkers who believe in the power of collaborative inquiry. Guided by our motto, Hinasson i Taotao Håya—“better thinking through collaboration”—we strive to create an environment where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but are essential to the process of philosophical exploration.
Our program emphasizes publicly-engaged philosophy, focusing on applying philosophical thinking to address and illuminate public issues, debates, and policies. We believe that philosophy should be accessible and relevant, engaging with the community to tackle ethical dilemmas, social justice concerns, and other societal challenges in a way that is understandable and actionable for all.
This page contains information about our program’s events and outreach initiatives, showcasing our commitment to publicly-engaged philosophy and community involvement.

I Chalan Mo’na (The Road Ahead) offers promising high school students on Guam the chance to engage with the humanities at a college level. During the summer, rising Seniors will participate in a two-week, residential summer seminar designed around important questions relating to self-determination in the context of Guam’s continued decolonization efforts. Students receive support throughout their senior year with college applications and engage in civic projects that apply their academic insights to real-world challenges.
I Chalan Mo'na is funded by a grant from the Teagle Foundation, a key supporter of liberal arts education across the nation. The Teagle Foundation is committed to strengthening liberal arts education, recognizing it as essential to meaningful work, effective citizenship, and a fulfilling life. Their mission is to act as a catalyst for improving teaching and learning in the arts and sciences while addressing the challenges of financial sustainability and accountability in higher education.

PI 410: Public Engaged Philosophy offers students an opportunity to explore how philosophical concepts and skills can be applied to make a positive impact outside of academia. This course emphasizes the importance of conveying complex moral and philosophical issues raised by current events and popular culture in a clear, accessible, and engaging manner. As part of the Carnegie Foundation's Elective Classification for Community Engagement, students are required to complete a project or conduct fieldwork that benefits the public. Here is a sample of some of the students' projects.
