Green Dot Violence Prevention Initiative Fall 2010

A GREEN DOT is any behavior, choice, word, or attitude that counters or displaces a red-dot of violence – by promoting safety for everyone and communicating utter intolerance for sexual violence, interpersonal violence, stalking, and child abuse.

 

Red Flag Campaign 4/5/10 – 4/9/10

The Sexual Assault Awareness Month Flag campaign is an outreach event in which small red flags were displayed throughout the campus grounds representing sexual assault victims on Guam from the years 2007-2009. Each year was displayed at different locations on campus, including behind the Humanities and Social Sciences building, in front of the RFK Library, and in front of the School of Education. A table display was at one of the different locations throughout the week with information about the campaign, providing pledge cards to individuals who made a pledge to prevent sexual assault or violence against women and men in general (pledge cards were then placed on a banner), and information about the Violence Against Women Prevention Program.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Exhibit 4/28/10

This exhibit was held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in which several campus and community service providers held table displays with information about the services their agency or organization provides for victims of sexual assault. The red flags from the Sexual Assault Awareness Month Red Flag Campaign were also on display at the Student Rotunda.

 

Clothesline Project 4/13/09 – 4/17/09

The Clothesline Project is a program started on Cape Cod, MA, in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. The previously-decorated shirts were displayed on the UOG campus. Participants were also asked to sign a banner to show their support against domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Silent Witness Exhibit 10/27/08

Red life-sized silhouettes were displayed at the Student Rotunda. Each represented an individual who was killed because of domestic violence on Guam, including female and male victims, youth and adults. The exhibit was in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2008. Various campus and community service providers held a table display of the different services they offer for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

FORUMS/SYMPOSIUMS
Engaging Men to Prevent Violence Against Women Symposium 5/8/09
A symposium about how to engage men to be allies with women to prevent violence against women. Special guests included Dr. James Sellmann (Acting Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences), Jon Guerrero (a student in the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology), and Erik Taitano (a Psychology student). They presented their perspectives of violence against women, how it wasn’t just a women’s issues but also men’s, and how men and women can work together to end violence against women.

 
Stalking Awareness Month Forum 2/5/09
A video regarding issues of stalking and news broadcast about a victim who was killed by a previous stalker was presented. A panel discussion followed after the presentation. Panelists consisted of Alicia Limtiaco (Attorney General of Guam and keynote speaker), Benjamin J. Cruz (Vice-Speaker of the 29th Guam Legistlature), Captain Leon Ryan (Guam Police Department), Harold Parker (Executive Director of Guam Legal Services Corporation), Vangie Cabacar (President of VARO), and Louise Toves (Executive Assistant to the UOG President). Panelists discussed their views and expertise regarding issues of stalking and provided prevention tips.

 

THEATRICAL PRODUCTION

The Cry From Within 11/12-14/10, 11/18-21/10
This theatrical production was a compilation of plays exploring situations in which sexually motivated violence leaves a mark on the lives of both men and women. Written and directed by UOG’s Theatre Directing class and produced in association with the Violence Against Women Prevention Program, this evening of theatre featured a public forum or “talk-back” after each performance to discuss these and other casualties of violence.

 

MOVIE NIGHTS

Sexual Assault Film Series 4/19-22/10
A series of films dealing with sexual assault were shown for one week at the UOG’s RFK Library during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The films involved movies based on true stories, realistic situations, and documentaries. The film series was a way to raise awareness about the issues surrounding sexual assault.

 

Freshman Fall/The Consent Game Show 4/15/10
During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a movie night was held focusing on issues about sexual assault. “Freshmen Fall” focused on sexual assault occurring on a college campus and what disciplinary actions could be taken upon a student who is accused of sexual assault. A game about consent in a sexual assault incident, called “The Consent Game,” followed after the movie presentation in which participants were given several scenarios in which they had to determine if it was a sexual assault incident or not and why.

 

No One Would Tell 10/22/09
This movie night focused on the issue of dating violence. The event featured “No One Would Tell,” a film about a high school couple going through a dating violence situation. A student panel discussion followed the movie presentation in which students shared their knowledge and experience about dating violence. This event was part of the various Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities.

Speak 4/30/09
This movie event was held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month as a way for students to be made aware about the issues surrounding sexual assault. A discussion session was led by a student panel who shared their views, opinions, and knowledge about this crime and ways to prevent and address the issue.

 

TABLING EVENTS

Purple Pledge 10/5/09 – 10/9/09
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, members of the UOG community made a written pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women. Then they placed their pledge cards on a large banner to be displayed.

 

Sexual Assault Awareness Month tabling event at Agana Shopping Center 4/11/09
Several community service providers had a table display of the services their agency or organization offers in terms of assisting victims of sexual assault. The Clothesline Project was also on display. The event was held at the Agana Shopping Center during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Test Your Knowledge on Stalking 1/28/09
Students participated in a trivia game regarding issues about stalking, including true or false questions, prevention questions, and statistics about stalking. The event was held in the Student Rotunda during Stalking Awareness Month in January 2009.

 

TRAINING WORKSHOPS

“Creating An Effective Campus-Based Response to Intimate Partner Violence” Training 5/27/09
This training workshop was a comprehensive three-hour workshop of presentations on assisting victims of intimate partner violence. Presenters included various victim service providers from the community, including the Guam Police Department, Victim Advocates Reaching Out (VARO), Guam Legal Services Corporation, and the Office of the Attorney General. The training provided each participant with critical information about intimate partner violence and how to respond to these crimes effectively. Upon completion of this training, participants were able to observe and identify signs of intimate partner violence and have the basic knowledge for assisting victims.

 

Sexual Assault Response Team Training (SARTT) 5/30/08
The Sexual Assault Response Team Training (SARTT) was a comprehensive, two-hour workshop of presentations, led by the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse’s Healing Hearts Crisis Center. Other presenters included various victim service providers in the community, such as the Guam Police Department, Victim Advocates Reaching Out (VARO), Child Protective Services (CPS), Adult Protective Services (APS), and the Office of the Attorney General. The training provided each participant with critical information about domestic/dating violence and sexual assault and knowledge on how to effectively respond to these crimes. Upon completion of this training, participants were able to observe and identify signs of domestic/dating violence and sexual assault and have the basic knowledge for helping or assisting victims by linking them with on- and off-campus victim service providers, with the goal of creating a safe, violence/crime-free campus community.

EDUCATION WORKSHOPS

Inafa’Maolek’s Theater Training Workshop 4/14/08 & 4/18/08
This workshop addressed issues regarding date rape and dating violence through the use of theatrical skits.

 

OUTREACH EVENTS

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Motorcade 4/29/09
The Office of the Attorney General, Child Protective Services, and the Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence held a motorcade during Sexual Assault Awareness Month from the villages of Dededo to Hagatna. A wave followed after the motorcade across the Chamorro Village Wednesday Night Market. This outreach event was to raise public awareness about sexual assault.

Women’s Basic Self-Defense Class 4/11/08 & 10/14/08
Self-defense classes for women were offered to learn how to defend themselves, prevent assaults, effectively fight back in life-threatening situations, identify dangerous situations, and more. Classes were instructed by Dr. Doug Farrer.
