UOG welcomes 500+ new Tritons
The next generation of Tritons was officially welcomed to the university at New Student Orientation events on July 28 and Aug. 14. Altogether, more than 500 new students are beginning their higher education journeys this semester at UOG.
The students received encouraging words from UOG President Thomas W. Krise and Senior Vice President and Provost Anita Borja Enriquez.
“You’re joining a really important organization that’s always done important work, but in this environment it’s even more important,” Krise said. “We’re in the middle of this pandemic and this economic challenge. This is an opportunity to think of new things, new businesses, new activities … and we’re here to help you do that kind of discovery.”
Enriquez echoed the sentiment, saying this generation of students will be the ones to rebuild the community and the economy following the pandemic.
“The fact that you’re here speaks to you as early adopters, as potential innovators,” she said.
In hearing from advisors and counselors, Student Government Association President Marc Bituin, and Enrollment Management & Student Success Dean Lawrence Camacho, students were encouraged to seek out the wealth of student support services as well as academic opportunities the university has to offer. Enriquez also highlighted the more than 300 student employment opportunities available on campus.
“A lot of experiences are available to explore — scholarships, research opportunities, internships. It’s all ready and available for you. All you have to do is ask and apply,” Bituin said.
The academic year will kick off on Aug. 26. For specific questions and resources on this semester, students are encouraged to visit https://www.uog.edu/fanuchanan2020.
