The University of Guam Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars officially launched its Scholarship Award Program at its quarterly meeting on Sept. 18 with the awarding of two scholarships. Jezreelyn Yap Bulaklak, a secondary education undergraduate student, and Mayumi Krause, a graduate student in clinical psychology, each received $1,000 scholarships for the school year.

“It is an honor to receive the inaugural scholarship award from the Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars,” Krause said. “Over the last two years, I have worked diligently in my academics and training for the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology program at UOG, and it is a great feeling to have that work recognized.”

Krause is working to earn her master’s by May. In the following few years, she plans to pursue licensure through the Guam Board of Allied Health Examiners to become a licensed mental health counselor in Guam to work with children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral, and mental health difficulties.

Bulaklak is in her sophomore year and plans to return to Saipan upon graduation to teach and serve there.

“This scholarship means a lot as it will greatly help in paying my tuition,” she said.

One unique aspect of this scholarship, according to Hiro Kurashina, vice chairman of the society and chairman of the scholarship committee, is that there is no restriction regarding the applicants’ nationality.

“It is intended so that foreign students can also apply for the scholarship. It is open to all full-time registered UOG students regardless of nationality, gender, or age,” he said.

Moving forward, the society will be awarding one scholarship per year to a full-time UOG student. Selection is based on the student’s grade-point average, essay, and letters of recommendation. The society will be announcing the application period for the 2019 award in December.
