NASA Guam Space Grant Undergraduate Internship

What is it?

The UOG NASA Guam Space Grant (NGSG) program, as a part of the University of Hawai‘i Space Grant Consortium (HSGC), invites undergraduate students to apply for the NASA Guam Space Grant Internship program to pursue professional internships, teaching internships, original research projects in the fields relevant to NASA's goals in aeronautics and space research. 

 

The program is geared towards the support and enhancement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as they pertain to NASA’s programs, including the study of the universe, evolution of life, our island’s connection to space, and the growth of innovations that enhance the general welfare of the community. The program encompasses a broad range of STEM fields, such as geology, biology, oceanography, astronomy, computer science, medicine, and more. 

 

Internship applications must be submitted to Dr. Romina King and Keanno Fausto by the respective date on the application.

 

Choose Your Path!

The NASA Guam Space Grant Undergraduate Internship program may take the path of either a research internship or a teaching internship. Students must select one (1) path.

 

The program includes:


(1) a one-semester internship at $3,000, extending into a second semester for a total of $6,000 per year, and

(2) a travel and supply budget of $500 per semester (research internships only, as funds allow).

Research interns will work on original research projects in the STEM fields relevant to NASA's goals in aeronautics, earth science, and space research. These areas include engineering, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, oceanography, mathematics, computer science, medicine, education, and other fields.

 

HSGC UOG awards will be based on the goals of the proposed research training and/or the quality of proposed research/study, appropriateness of proposed research to NASA’s goals, and feasibility of proposed research/study within the planned time frame, and the academic qualifications of the student.

 

Students must secure a mentor relevant to their field of study prior to submitting an application. If students need help finding a faculty mentor, please contact Dr. Romina King at roking@triton.uog.edu 

Successful candidates will be designated HSGC UOG students and will:
• Work 20 hours/semester week
• Be provided training for/mentoring on their projects during the semester.
• Receive additional funds for travel and/or supplies, as funds allow.
• Commit adequate time for training and research.
• Must be a full-time or part-time student in a STEM major and have a mentor.
• Submit mid-semester, end of semester and final progress reports describing their work and accomplishments.
• Give a project poster or oral presentation each semester at the NASA Guam Symposium in the Spring and the HSGC Symposium in the Fall

Teaching interns will be expected to partner with a STEM University of Guam professor and provide instructional support.

 

Successful candidates will be designated HSGC Teaching UOG Interns and will:


• Work 160 hours per semester (10 – 15 hours per semester week)
•Provide instructional support that includes, but is not limited to, preparing the classroom, preparing materials, grading assignments, labs, and exams; running laboratory exercises; providing technical support with online resources (e.g. Moodle, Zoom, WebAdvisor, etc.); offering extra help for students; and cleaning and securing the lab or classroom. • Submit mid-semester, end of semester and final progress reports describing their work and accomplishments.

 

Students in these internships will partner with local agencies/businesses to assist in skill-building opportunities, and be able to pursue original research projects in the fields relevant to NASA's goals in aeronautics and space research. The NASA Guam Space Grant Professional Internship includes:

 

(1) a one-semester internship at $3,000, extending into a second semester for a total of $6,000 per year, and

(2) a travel and supply budget of $500 per semester (research internships only, as funds allow).

 

Professional interns will be expected to partner with a local agency or organization, having the opportunity to pursue internships or participate in original research projects relevant to NASA's goals in aeronautics, earth science, and space research. These areas include aviation, engineering, geology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, oceanography, mathematics, computer science, medicine, education, and other fields.

 

Awards will be based on the goals of the proposed research training, the quality of proposed research/work plan, appropriateness of proposed research to NASA’s goals, feasibility of proposed research/study within the planned time frame, and the academic qualifications of the student. Students must secure a mentor in a local agency/ organization relevant to their field of study prior to submitting an application. • Project must be STEM-related.

• Submit mid-semester, end of semester and final progress reports describing their work and accomplishments.

• Give a project poster or oral presentation at the NASA Guam Symposium in the Spring and the HSGC Symposium in the Fall. 

 

 Who Can Apply?

All applicants must be:

  1.  A U.S. citizen and meet a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement.
  2. A full-time undergraduate student or at least a part-time college-level student on Guam enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours.
  3. Sponsored by a mentor who is willing to guide the student for the duration of the award.*
  4. Prior experience is not required.

*Mentors for the Research/Teaching Internship are faculty at the University of Guam but senior researchers or other qualified personnel at UH or elsewhere are eligible.

 Women, under-represented minorities (specifically native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics), and physically challenged students who have interest in space-related fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

Internship applications are due by August 2, 2024 for the Fall 2024 semester. The original application material and required documents should be submitted by this deadline to Dr. Romina King via e-mail at roking@triton.uog.edu and Keanno Fausto at faustok9679@triton.uog.edu. Selected applicants will be notified by the HSGC URI Selection Committee.

No. While all paths will receive stipends to either do original research with a mentor or be a teaching intern for a mentor, the research internships provides an additional 500 USD for supplies and travel as needed and as funds allow.
