EMERITUS HONORS

The purpose of emeritus(a) status is to provide a retired employee, or Regent, who has demonstrated a distinguished career to retain an honorary title of the rank of the last office or specialty held upon retirement, as well as allow the for the opportunity to remain active at some level in academic, research, and/or service following retirement.  Follow the application deadlines and packet directions below.  The emeritus(a) honor was first conferred in 1974, and the current list of emeritus(a) can be found here (link).  Email the Board of Regent's Liaison at BOR.Liaison@triton.uog.edu for questions regarding a nomination. 

The University of Guam Board of Regents is accepting nominations for Emeritus(a) Honors per these timelines and directions:

Follow the instructions on the application package to make sure the application gets forwarded to BOR.Liaison@triton.uog.edu. Internally, the review can take up to 35 Business Days and will then be aligned with the next appropriate BOR meeting based on the timing of submission.

Criteria for Emeritus(a) Honors:

Criteria for Regent Emeritus(a)
(Nominee must meet all four (4) criteria for eligibility)

  1. Has completed at least one (1) six-year term or its equivalent as a full member of the BOR and retires or is not continuing as Regent.
  2. Has distinguished himself/herself by making significant contributions to the University of Guam.
  3. Has demonstrated active participation and engagement while serving on the Board.
  4. Has demonstrated philanthropic support and demonstrated interest in the University of Guam.

Criteria for President Emeritus(a)
(Nominee must meet all three (3) criteria for eligibility)

  1. Has at least ten (10) years of service as a full-time faculty member and/or administrator at the University of Guam (UOG).
  2. Has at least three (3) years of service as the President of UOG.
  3. Has distinguished himself/herself by making significant contributions to UOG.

Criteria for Vice President or Provost, Dean, or Director (or Equivalent Position) Emeritus(a)
Nominee must meet all three (3) criteria for eligibility)

  1. Has at least ten (10) years of service as a full-time faculty member and/or administrator at the University of Guam.
  2. Has at least three (3) years of service in the position for which the Emeritus(a) status is to be bestowed.
  3. Has distinguished himself/herself by making significant contributions to the University of Guam.

Criteria for Professor / Extension Agent Emeritus(a)
(Nominee must meet all three (3) criteria for eligibility)

  1. Is a tenured faculty at the minimum rank of Associate Professor/Extension Agent IV or Professor/Extension Specialist at the University of Guam (UOG) at the time of retirement.
  2. Has at least fifteen (15) years of service as a full-time faculty member or a combination of said years of service as a full-time faculty and academic administrator at UOG.
  3. Has been reviewed using the following procedures to confirm that he/she has made significant contributions to UOG.

Benefits of an Emeritus(a) Honor
A person receiving emeritus(a) status receives the following benefits:

  1. An identification card shall be issued indicating emeritus(a) status for the person so honored.
  2. The name of the honoree shall be listed under the respective approved emeritus(a) status in the Undergraduate Catalog and Graduate Bulletin. It is the responsibility of the emeritus(a) person to maintain contact on at least a yearly basis with the Senior Vice President and Provost, Academic and Student Affairs (SVPP), in order to remain listed in the two catalogs. The emeritus(a) person’s name may be dropped from the catalog and bulletin should contact not be maintained. 
  3. Appropriate department/unit stationary may be used and a mailbox shall be provided, if available.
  4. Participation in commencement, academic processions, and convocations and other UOG-sponsored events shall be encouraged.
  5. Full library privileges shall be provided and computer center privileges.
  6. Based on the demonstrated needs of UOG, the right to participate in grants, contracts, lectureships, and other research or service projects funded by UOG or outside sources and administered by UOG.
  7. The right to be listed on the campus speaker roster, if desired.
  8. The opportunity to be invited to participate on UOG committees.
  9. Co-use office space, use of equipment, and professional services (including internet account) on an “as available” basis.
  10. Be assisted by staff personnel assigned to the Emeritus Hall.
  11. Be accorded appropriate recognition at UOG functions.
  12. Be involved with UOG fundraising projects.

Based on the demonstrated needs of UOG, a person receiving emeritus(a) status who has retired from the government of Guam Retirement Fund may be reemployed at UOG on a part-time or full-time basis in accordance with the statutes and regulations of the government of Guam pertaining to such reemployment.
