Student Advisement
Academic advisement is provided to assist students throughout their educational career as they prepare to become competent entry-level professionals. An advisor monitors student progress, provides consultation in planning a course of study, and assists in problem solving with regard to classroom, clinical pratice, and field course work. The advisor serves as an "anchor person" with whom students may confer regarding any program-related problem or question. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor on a regular basis throughout the semester and to seek assistance before registering for classes.
Incoming/New/Transfer students declared in Pre-Nursing, Pre-Social Work, or Health
Sciences are initially assigned to the Academic Advisement & Assessment Coordinator (AAAC) for advisement. To receive registration clearance, students must attend an orientation:
- Pre-Nursing students may attend a Pre-Nursing Orientation
- Pre-Social Work students may attend a Pre-Social Work Orientation
- Health Sciences students may attend a Health Sciences Orientation
Students may also schedule an Academic Advisement Appointment any time during the semester.
Students transition from the AAAC as their advisor to an assigned faculty advisor after they complete their program applications or reach upperclassmen level, depending on their degree program:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program
- Students who have been formally accepted to the Pre-Nursing level via Pre-Nursing Acceptance application
- Students who have been formally admitted to the Nursing level via Nursing Admission application
- Bachelor of Social Work Program
- Students who have been formally admitted to the Social Work level via Social Work Admission application
- Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Program
-
Students who have reached 61 credits or more
-
The Nursing Admissions and Academic Standards Committee (AASC) and the Division of Social Work will determine a faculty advisor for pre-nursing/nursing and social work students, respectively, after the students have completed their applications.
The Health Sciences Program Chair will oversee Health Sciences students with 61 credits or more. The AAAC and/or faculty advisor will assist students in determining which Health Sciences concentration best fits their academic and career goals. The advisor is an important guide in helping the student plan their coursework in order to meet degree requirements.
