Coaches, athletic directors, parents whose children are involved in sports, and others who work with active youth are invited to attend Hydrate to Dominate — a workshop on proper hydration for sports performance. Hosted by the nutrition and food science teams of the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service, the workshop will be offered in two identical sessions: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
“Guam’s signature sun-and-rain climate presents unique hydration challenges for active youth, and beating the heat takes more than just water. With so many commercial drinks in stores and flashy marketing claims, it can be difficult for coaches, parents, and others to know what’s appropriate and worth the cost,” said Lenora Matanane, an extension agent of nutrition and a registered dietitian nutritionist with UOG Land Grant.
The two-hour workshop will provide practical, evidence-based guidance on hydration for youth sports performance and all-around health. Participants will engage in an evaluation of commercial sports drinks and will then use locally grown calamansi to create a flavorful homemade sports drink that can be made affordably year-round.
The workshop will be taught by Matanane and Jian Yang, UOG Land Grant’s extension
specialist in food science.
Interested participants can register at https://url.uog.edu/hydrate. A $10 registration fee may be paid online or by cash or check at the workshop. For
