UOG Tritons Lose Opener in Triton Men’s Volleyball League to Big Digs, Andersen Bombers Defeat Adahi on Opening Night
The UOG Tritons opened their spring season Monday night with one of the toughest losses in program history, falling to the Big Digs 3-0 in the second match of the evening. The Big Digs won by scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-13.
Although new to the Triton Men’s Volleyball League, the Big Digs feature several experienced
players who have competed in the league with other teams. Their roster includes three
former UOG players, including former UOG Men’s Volleyball Most Valuable Players Joe
Mafnas and Isaac Limtiaco.
The Tritons entered the season with several new players and limited preparation time.
After trading points early in the opening set, the Big Digs pulled away and cruised
to a 25-14 win. UOG showed improvement in the second set, staying within reach throughout,
but ultimately dropped the set 25-20. The third set was again lopsided, as the Big
Digs closed out the match with a 25-13 victory.
With the win, the Big Digs opened the season at 1-0, while the Tritons fell to 0-1.
In the opening match of the night, the Andersen Bombers faced Adahi, a new team in
the Triton League. Adahi came out strong, winning a tightly contested first set 25-22
behind several powerful attacks.
The Bombers responded by taking control of the match, winning the next three sets
25-17, 25-16, and 25-18 to secure a 3-1 victory and assert themselves against the
league newcomers.
Andersen also opened the season at 1-0, while Adahi dropped to 0-1.
