UOG Hosts Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist Manny Crisostomo Presentation “The Long View: Decades of Visual Storytelling”

12/9/2025

The University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will host a presentation by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Manny Crisostomo titled “The Long View: Decades of Visual Storytelling” on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in the CLASS Lecture Hall.

In this lecture, Crisostomo will share what he describes as nearly 50 years of imagery — “a mix of photojournalism, artistic expression and living cultural anthropology.”

Crisostomo is Guam’s first and only Pulitzer Prize winner and is recognized for his extensive work documenting CHamoru people and cultures of the Pacific, including CHamorus in the Marianas and throughout the diaspora. His career spans roles as a multimedia photojournalist, documentarian, adjunct instructor, book author, magazine publisher, and art gallery owner.

He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for his work at the Detroit Free Press on “A Class Act, The Life and Times of Southwestern High School,” which documented the challenges faced by teenagers in a racially diverse community facing drugs, violence, and economic hardship.

Crisostomo is also well known for his books Legacy of Guam: I Kustumbren Chamoru and Guam From the Heavens, and for launching Latte Magazine in 1995. His work has earned numerous awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for “The Leftover People,” documenting the last wave of Hmong refugees.

In 2016, he returned to Guam to document the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts, later publishing Journeys to the Heart: Pacific Islanders Celebrate Their Indigenous Cultures, with a redesigned and expanded second edition released in 2024.

This event is part of the commitment of the UOG College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences to supporting the humanities and highlighting creative professionals whose work deepens understanding of island life and culture.

The event is free and open to the public.
