After a wildfire makes its way through Guam’s grassy hills, the land might seem quiet on the surface, but it’s beneath the soil where the devastation hits hardest. The burning that took place in one day can change the soil for years in ways that are not always immediately visible. The result can quietly affect plant growth and, in particular, the growth of agricultural crops, which require high concentrations of nutrients.
