Triton vs Northern Construction

It was supposed to be an easy night of basketball at the UOG Calvo Field House on Wednesday, April 22. The top two teams in the Triton Men's Basketball League, the Andersen Bombers and Northern Construction, were playing FairZesh and the MicroFriends. However, it ended up being a dramatic night of overtimes.

In the opening game, FairZesh jumped on the league's top team, the Andersen Bombers, and led after the first quarter, 29–25. Chris Connor got hot for FairZesh in the second quarter, scoring 14 points in the period. He helped hold off any comeback by the Bombers, giving FairZesh a 55–49 lead at halftime.

FairZesh continued to play hard to open the second half. The Andersen Bombers played tough man-to-man defense on Chris Connor. The teams played an even third period, with both scoring 22 points. FairZesh entered the final period leading 77–71.

Charles Wingate, the MVP from the last Triton Men's Basketball League, took over. He scored 15 points in the fourth quarter for the Bombers and drilled the final two free throws to send the game into overtime. The Bombers also caught a break. The Andersen team intentionally missed a free throw while down by two with four seconds left. Wingate grabbed the loose ball and put up a shot, but was fouled by FairZesh. He made two free throws to force overtime.

Wingate scored seven points in overtime to lead the Bombers to the win.

Charles Wingate led the Bombers with 27 points, while Kierhon Wiley added 21. Chris Connor led FairZesh with 35 points, and EJ Mori scored 22.

The Andersen Bombers finished the regular season at 5–0, while FairZesh is 2–3.

In the second game, a similar script unfolded. The MicroFriends, who came into the game winless, gave the second-place Northern Construction team a tough challenge.

The MicroFriends started strong and led 26–14 after the first quarter. Northern came back in the second quarter, holding the MicroFriends to nine points while scoring 16. However, they still trailed at halftime, 35–30.

Northern evened the game in the third period by outscoring the MicroFriends 26–21. The game was tied 56–56 going into the fourth quarter. Both teams led at different points in the fourth period, and the game seesawed back and forth. Regulation ended with the score tied 80–80.

The first overtime was an offensive battle, with both teams scoring frequently. The MicroFriends led by three with 0.9 seconds left. Northern Construction managed to get a shot off in the corner and swished it to tie the game again, forcing a second overtime. Northern Construction controlled the second overtime and won the game 116–111.

Northern Construction was led by RJ Diwa with 33 points, while Ken Brozo led the MicroFriends with 28.

Northern finished the regular season at 4–1, while the MicroFriends went 0–5 in the Triton League.
