Tapestries of Resilience: Securing Our Island Communities

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is hosting the 46th Annual Research Conference. This year’s theme, "Tapestries of Resilience: Securing Our Island Communities", highlights the intricate ways our island communities weave together our approaches to security in comprehensive and multifaceted ways. We encourage conference participants to consider how our unique responses to food security, climate change, delicate ecosystems, affordable housing, economic inequality, health, military security, culture, history, identity, education, and more can be thought of as threads in our “tapestries of resilience” as we create resilient communities for our fast-changing world.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary Therese Perez Hattori, Director of the Pacific Islands Development Program and affiliate faculty at the East-West Center.

The conference will be held in-person on the UOG campus, beginning with our keynote presentation on the evening of March 6. Conference Presentations will continue the following day on Friday, March 7, 2025, followed by the opening of an art exhibit at the Isla Gallery and conference closing.

We welcome local and international scholars, artists, community experts and students to participate. Those engaged in scholarly and creative work in any disciplines are invited to submit abstracts of their work relating to the conference theme or other work of local and regional importance. Panels, as well as individual presentations of papers, posters, and artwork are welcome. The deadline to submit via the link below is December 20, 2024. Submissions received by this date will receive preference in scheduling.

Presentations of all types are limited to:

  • 20 minutes for presentation
  • 5 minutes for discussion
  • An abstract of no more than 150 words
  • Real-time presentations only (not pre-recorded)
