UOG Tritons Upset MicroFriends For First Win of Season
The University of Guam Men's Basketball Team upset the MicroFriends on Wednesday night, April 23, for their first win of the Triton Men's Basketball League, eliminating the MicroFriends from the Triton League playoffs.
The Tritons entered the game with a 0-9 record and were a total of 0-16 in the Triton League for the 2024-25 academic year. However, by playing their most complete game of the two Triton Men's Basketball League seasons, they pulled off an upset of the MicroFriends, who were 2-0 against the Tritons in the regular season.
UOG got off to a good start, leading 24-22 after 1st quarter. But the 2nd quarter was key in the game, as the Tritons outscored the MicroFriends 26-16, leading at halftime 50-38.
UOG managed to hold their lead in the 3rd period, but the MicroFriends outscored UOG 22-18, trailing UOG by 8 points 68-60.
It looked like the Triton were going wither in the 4th period, as the MicroFriends, led Jose Ignacio 14 points in the quarter, were able to tie the game at 78-78. However, UOG was able to hit 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch, and Gilbert Hollingsworth secured a big steal followed by a layup to give the lead.
UOG was at the line with 1.3 seconds left, leading by 3 points, when Michael Qvinata hit the first free throw to seal the game for UOG and a four-point win at 88-84.
Jacob Mercado led the Tritons with 20 points (including 4 three-pointers), and Kyle Watanabe added 15 for UOG. Jose Ignacio scored 34 for the MicroFriends, while Vander Valentino added 21 for the Friends. UOG Tritons are now 1-9 for the season, while the MicroFriends finished the Triton League at 5-5.

The winner of this game will play the KFC Bombers on Friday, May 2, to advance to the Championship Game against Team Austability for the Triton League Championship.
