UOG Horizons: Knowledge for Life - Determinants of health: What shapes well-being
Why do some people enjoy good health while others face challenges like chronic illness? It's easy to assume that individual choices - like what we eat or how often we exercise - are the main drivers. But the reality is far more complex.
Health is shaped by a web of interconnected factors known as the determinants of health. According to the World Health Organization, these include the social and economic environment, the physical environment and an individual's characteristics and behaviors. Income, education, working conditions, access to health care, social support and even cultural beliefs all play critical roles. For example, people with higher incomes or better education tend to enjoy better health, while those in unsafe or polluted environments face more significant risks.
