The old adage to “diversify your portfolio” advises individuals to place their money in multiple types of investments to reduce risk and losses and to gain exposure to potentially lucrative new trends and opportunities. The same philosophy can be applied to agriculture. Adding diversity to the types of crops grown in Guam can be a financial safety net for farmers and a food security safety net for the island as a whole. For example, if a pest or certain weather conditions reduce the yield on one type of crop, another crop may be unaffected.

One crop with potential in Guam is seedless watermelon. Watermelon thrives in warm, humid climates, and seedless watermelon, in particular, is popular among consumers because it’s easier to eat and is a pleasant way of hydrating in the warm weather. It’s a healthy choice as well, being low in calories and high in vitamins A, B6 and C and antioxidants including lycopene, L-citrulline and L-arginine.
