A team of University of Guam accounting students was one of two winners of the undergraduate division of the AGA’s 2024 Government Finance Case Challenge.

Albin Tinoso, Katelyn Villa, and Ilaria Williams-Dueñas each received an award of $1,500. The students were enrolled in the BA401 Government Accounting course taught by Dr. Doreen Crisostomo-Muña, professor of accounting at UOG’s School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA) and faculty advisor for the team.

“The students applied public sector financial management principles learned in class and used them in a real-world environment, enhancing their academic experience,” said Crisostomo-Muña.

For the Government Finance Case Challenge, teams had to analyze data and develop a Citizen-Centric Report and video presentation on a U.S. state, city, or county government assigned by AGA. This year, the target location was the U.S. state of Maine.

The UOG team’s win highlights SBPA’s efforts in preparing their students to work and contribute to specialized fields like government accounting.

“I am incredibly proud of the students’ hard work,” said Crisostomo-Muña. “This achievement showcases their dedication and skills while highlighting the power of teamwork in navigating the complexities of public sector finance. Their success reflects the rise of future leaders in public service and government finance.”
