Record number of students compete in UOG’s 2025 High School Chemistry Olympiad
On April 26, 2025, the University of Guam hosted its largest ever High School Chemistry Olympiad competition with 122 student participants. Coordinated by the Chemistry Program faculty at the University of Guam and promoted through the Chemical Society of Guam, the competition grows in both scope and participation every year, reflecting a growing interest in the chemical sciences among Guam’s youth.
“We’re proud to see such enthusiasm for science among high school students,” said Dr. John Limtiaco, assistant professor of chemistry at UOG. “The Chemistry Olympiad provides a platform for students to challenge themselves academically and explore future pathways in STEM.”
The annual Chemistry Olympiad brought together young scientific minds from across the island to compete. This year's competition welcomed students from four local schools: Saint John's School, Harvest Christian Academy, Notre Dame High School, and Father Dueñas Memorial School, along with home-schooled participants.
The students competed in two exam categories — Honors and Standard — with the following students taking home awards:
"We are very grateful for the Chemistry Program and the Chemical Society of Guam for running this competition,” said Evangeline Mangune, a chemistry teacher at Father Dueñas Memorial School. She says their school is planning to compete again next year.
The 2025 UOG High School Chemistry Olympiad was made possible through the generous support of local sponsors Lotte Duty Free Guam, Pacific Grocers, Nexan Tire and Autocare, and L&K Communications together with individual donations from the chemistry faculty.
