Health care stakeholders invited to assist in A.I. development to benefit underrepresented populations
The lead researchers of the National Institutes of Health–funded AIM-AHEAD program will be in Guam on Jan. 27 and 28 seeking to engage with academic institutions and health-related organizations and small businesses that would like to participate in the development of A.I. for improving health care among nationally underrepresented communities.
The AIM-AHEAD program is working to address health care disparities and health inequities by increasing the diversity of researchers involved in the development of A.I. and machine learning models. Involvement of researchers from Guam’s community can help ensure that upcoming A.I. technologies represent the local population.
AIM-AHEAD will be launching multiple research, capacity-building, and training programs this year for which Guam stakeholders can apply. AIM-AHEAD program lead Jamboor Vishwanatha and project director Lavanya Vishwanatha will be leading an AIM-AHEAD Community Engagement and Stakeholder Workshop on from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration Building, Room 129.
“In Guam, large amounts of data are collected but often underutilized,” said Grazyna Badowski, a professor of mathematics at UOG who is facilitating the event. “This workshop is designed to help Guam communities learn about AIM-AHEAD funding opportunities. It brings together stakeholders to learn, collaborate, and harness A.I. and data science to tackle pressing local challenges effectively.”
Faculty and professionals from health care and community organizations that collect electronic health data, analyze health data, or work to obtain grants in these areas are invited to come learn more about the program and its research, capacity-building, and training program opportunities. The training programs will be designed for graduate students, post-doctorates, early-career faculty, and professionals in advanced data analysis.
