Five more schools, child care centers sign the 5-2-1-Almost None pledge to promote healthy lifestyles for children
Five more schools and child care centers have signed the 5-2-1-Almost None partner pledge — a commitment to become a champion of healthy eating and physical activity for young children and their families. The 5-2-1 campaign is part of the SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education) Program administered by the University of Guam Cooperative Extension & Outreach in collaboration with the Department of Public Health & Social Services.
Over the past six months, the new pledges have been signed by:
They are now part of 38 total community pledge partners, which includes 10 elementary schools, two middle schools, 17 food stores, eight community centers, and one day care.
“The path to a healthier adult population on our island starts with education at childhood,” said Tanisha F. Aflague, a registered dietitian nutritionist with UOG Cooperative Extension and the program coordinator for SNAP-Ed. “By partnering with the 5-2-1 program, schools and child care centers are establishing a foundation for the next generation to feel good and stay healthy.”
The pledge is a year-long commitment to promote the 5-2-1-Almost None behaviors, which recommend:
As a 5-2-1-AN pledge partner, the schools and child care centers receive assistance from the UOG SNAP-Ed team in adopting internal policies that promote fruit, vegetable, and water consumption and regular physical activity. They are also supplied with educational posters, banners, classroom materials, and newsletter articles to display and distribute. Additionally, the center’s staff and parents benefit from a nine-session “Eating Smart and Being Active” workshop conducted by UOG’s extension nutrition team.
A highlight for each partner is the addition of a unique activity gameboard that the SNAP-Ed team paints on their playground. The gameboard includes hopscotch-like spaces, each suggesting different fun exercises, like jumping jacks and toe touches, while promoting local fruits and vegetables.
“This pledge was a priority for us because we want our children and their families, as well as our staff, to be healthy and strong,” said Delilah Charfauros, director of SFFC Daycare. “The children are already learning healthy habits and the importance of exercise, and we are looking forward to more trainings and lessons to come.”
