UOG releases 2024 calendars for fishing, gardening enthusiasts
The University of Guam has released two calendars for 2024, designed to assist the community in keeping track of important dates and providing valuable information related to fishing and gardening on Guam.
The UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, along with the Guam Green Growth initiative, leads the annual project, connecting the United Nations Sustainability Goals with CHamoru culture.
"At UOG, we take pride in crafting practical tools and resources, exemplified by these two calendars. While they serve as handy planners, they go beyond scheduling, offering valuable insights into our diverse fish species and the cherished traditions of family fishing,” said UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez.
“Additionally, these calendars provide tips on growing plants and vegetables, fostering an interest in backyard gardening and sustainable food systems. We believe in making learning not just informative but also applicable to real life," President Enriquez added.
The 2024 Guam Tide Chart Calendar: Family Fishing Edition highlights members of the island’s fishing community with their families. This calendar is a collaborative effort involving Guam EPSCOR, UOG Marine Laboratory, and NSF INCLUDES SEAS Islands Alliance Guam.
Each calendar features tide chart data based out of Apra Harbor and was prepared by the UOG Guam Marine Laboratory. Every month features fishermen with their catch of the day, the scientific name and CHamoru name for each catch, along with sustainability tips for the new year.
The 2024 Guam Grower’s Calendar: Fanha’aniyan Manåmon Guahån was created in collaboration with Guahån Sustainable Culture. This calendar features a different local fruit or vegetable each month, listing both the English and CHamoru names, characteristics of each crop, and gardening tips for optimal growth. Additionally, the calendar includes tide chart data.
“We invite the community to enjoy our newly released 2024 Guam Tide Chart Calendar and the Guam Grower's Calendar. While you enjoy the fish and plants throughout the year, also learn more about the intrinsic connection between island sustainability and our culture,” said Austin Shelton, Director of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant.
Both calendars were funded by the Governor’s Education Assistance and Youth Empowerment Grant Program.
