The University of Press is launching Ricky: A Life Worth Sharing, Volume I—a posthumous autobiography by Ricardo “Ricky” J. Bordallo and C. Sablan Gault.

Published 35 years after his passing, Ricky is Bordallo’s account of the joys of an idyllic childhood in Guam to the devastation of World War II and the island’s transformation in the post-war year.

Bordallo served as governor from 1975 to 1978 and 1983 to 1986 and was the founding member and first chairman of the Democratic Party of Guam. In addition to serving seven terms as a senator from 1956 to 1970, Bordallo is also known for securing the first distributorship of Toyota vehicles outside the U.S. and for his success in the automotive sales business.

The book was written alongside his trusted colleague and second cousin C. Sablan Gault, who chronicles the highs and lows of Bordallo’s life through a series of interviews they began recording in 1987 after his second gubernatorial term, and during his ongoing trial on federal corruption charges.

“Our work sessions consisted of long conversations and back-and-forth questions. We filled more than a hundred 60-minute and 90-minute audio tapes,” says Gault in the book’s introduction. “Ricky did not just talk at me; I dug, probed, and pressed for explanations and details. He never got tired of my questions, and I never got tired of listening.”

The second volume of the series is set to release in the coming year and will chronicle Bordallo’s business and political challenges accomplishments.

The book launch will be held at the Government House in Agaña on Monday, Jan. 27, 2024, from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. The event is open to the public and will include remarks from special guests, interactive displays, and free refreshments.

Ricky: A Life Worth Sharing is now available for pre-order online at uogpress.com and in-store at UOG Press for a special early-bird price of $20. After the promotion ends on Monday, Jan. 13, the book will retail for $35.

Ricky will be made available at local bookstores following the launch.
