KFC Bombers Reach Finals of Triton League With Overtime Win Against Northern Construction
The KFC Bombers have pushed Northern Construction twice during the regular season and the early playoffs but came up short. This time, the Bombers secured the victory over Northern when it counted the most, earning a spot in the Triton Men's Basketball League championship game. They triumphed in a 118-117 classic game that ended in overtime at the UOG Calvo Field House.
The Andersen team will face Team Atypical in the championship of the Triton League on Saturday at 7:00 pm. KFC will have to beat Atypical twice to win the championship. The "If necessary" game is scheduled for next Tuesday night if needed.
On Thursday night, it was a close battle all the way through, as the Bombers in the past would fall behind by a large margin and come back too late to make it interesting; this time, the game stayed close.
The Bombers took the lead in the first quarter, winning the opening 10 minutes 25-21. They would push their lead to 11 points in the 2nd quarter until Northern Construction returned and took a 2-point lead at halftime, 50-48.
Darius Amos for the Bombers would score 19 points in the 3rd quarter to lead KFC to an 80-72 lead going into the 4th period. However, Northern Construction would return and lead 103-100 with time running out in the game when Amos hit a 3-point shot with 2.7 seconds remaining to send it to overtime.
In overtime, it was a back-and-forth affair with Elmar Moradas putting Northen up by one at 117-116 with 10 seconds left in the game, but Carrington Simpson drove the lane and scored on a layup with 4 seconds left to put the Bombers up 118-117. Northern Construction would get a final shot, which they made, but it was ruled after the horn had sounded, and KFC won the game.
Darius Amos led the Bombers with 35 points on the night, with Carrington Simpson adding 27. Jake Diwa led Northern Construction with 39 points.
The KFC Bombers are now 7-2 in the Triton League, while the Northern Construction team finished the season with a 6-3 record.
KFC now takes on Team Atypical for the championship of the Triton League. KFC must beat Atypical twice to win the crown. KFC does have a win against Atypical in the regular season, but none of the national team players for Atypical was playing that night.
If KFC wins the first game, there will be an "If Necessary" game for the championship on Tuesday, December 10, at 7:00 pm.
