University of Guam Marine Lab Director Laurie Raymundo grew up in the Philippines, a biodiversity hotspot where breathtaking coral ecosystems thrive.

It is also where dynamite fishing and other human pressures on the reefs have caused great destruction.

Witnessing this juxtaposition started Raymundo on her quest to pursue her PhD at Cornell University, researching coral diseases and applying her knowledge to rehabilitating the coral reefs she treasures.
