In Memoriam: Dr. Velma Sablan

Re: Condolence – Dr. Velma Sabla
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Velma Antonia Sablan on December 30, 2024, at the age of 74.
Dr. Sablan served more than 30 years at the University of Guam, starting as in instructor in 1983 at the College of Education and advancing to assistant professor, associate professor, and then full professor in 2008. She retired from the School of Education in 2021.
In addition to her role as a professor, Sablan worked with the UOG Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Service, and Research (Guam CEDDERS), the Micronesian Language Institute, and served as director of the Western Pacific Special Education Consortium.
Dr. Sablan earned a Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders from Marquette University in 1972, and a Master of Education in Reading and Related Learning Disabilities from Harvard University in 1976. She was a recipient of a UOG Doctoral Fellowship, and after completing her Ph.D. in Educational Research and Program Evaluation in a joint doctoral program from San Diego State University and Clarement Graduate School, she returned to Guam.

Last Respects will be held Friday, January 10, 2025, at Ada’s Mortuary in Sinajana from 10:30am to 12:00 noon. Private cremation will follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Agana Heights at 12:00pm. Inurnment to follow at Pigo Catholic Cemetery in Anigua.
