To close out the Engineers Week celebration, the 10th Annual Harold Dean Gillham Bridge Building/Design Competition was held last February 24, 2024, at the University of Guam Fine Arts Auditorium. This event was a collaborative effort between the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Guam Post, UOG SAME Student Chapter, and GHD Inc. A total of 11 Guam High Schools participated, with 38 teams comprising 116 Guam High School students.

The competition aimed to spark students' interest in Engineering by providing a hands-on opportunity to design and build model bridges using materials such as balsa wood and glue. The students competed in categories for highest strength-to-weight ratio, highest load applied, and best aesthetics. Throughout the event, students fostered a sense of camaraderie and community by observing designs from other teams and interacting with their peers. This interaction not only enhanced their problem-solving and communication skills but also ignited a passion for Engineering and Technology.

The event was further enriched by a keynote address from Mr. Terangue Eric “Tiger” Gillham, a registered Civil and Structural Engineer who has been practicing in Guam and the surrounding islands of Micronesia for over thirty years. Mr. Gillham is also the President and Principal of GK2 Inc., an Engineering consulting firm founded by his late father, Harold Dean Gillham, after whom the competition is named. In his keynote address, he shared his professional journey and insights, offering valuable perspectives both within and beyond the field of engineering.

The SAME Guam Post, UOG SAME Student Chapter, and GHD continues to support and host the Annual Harold Dean Gillham Bridge Building/Design Competition for all Guam high schools, striving to inspire future generations of engineering students.
