The Andersen Bombers and Umitde volleyball teams advanced in the playoffs of the Triton Men's League Playoffs last night in the UOG Calvo Field House. In the first match, the Umitde team pulled a minor upset, beating the Southern Sutterez 3-0 and Team Elevate almost pulled a major upset, losing a 5 set match to the Bombers, but the Bombers came through to win 3-2 in the match.
Umitde came into the match as the #5 Seed and Southern Sutterez was the #4 Seed and had a victory over Umitde in the regular season. But Southern played without their coach on Thursday night and never seemed to get motivated in the match, while Umitde was coming off their first win of the season on Tuesday night and had momentum coming into the match.
Umitde won the first set 25-20 and it was the closest set of the match, as Umitde won the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-17 to win the match 3-0.
Umitde is now 2-4 season and plays the UOG Tritons in the semi-finals of the tournament next Wednesday night. The Southern Sutterez finished the season at 2-4.
In the nightcap, the Bombers came into the match as a strong favorite to win the contest as the #3 Seed (3-2 record) in the tournament and Team Elevate came into the match-up as the winless #6 Seed. But Team Elevate would give in the Bombers everything they had and almost pulled off an upset.
The Bombers came out and played well in the first set and won 25-18. But Team Elevate would come back in the 2nd set to win 25-17 and even the match at 1-1. In the 3rd set, the Bombers would argue a call for several minutes that seemed to take the life out of the Andersen team and the Bombers lost the 3rd set 25-23.
Team Elevate would go out to a big lead (18-11) in the 4th set, but the Bombers got their momentum back in the match and came back to win 25-21 which forced a 5th and deciding set to 15 points. But the Bombers keep their momentum going and won the 5th set easily, 15-7 and the match.
The Bombers are now 4-2 in the league and face #2 Seed U-Fly in the semi-finals. Team Elevate finished the season at 0-6.
The semi-finals are next Wednesday and the matches are:
- 6:30pm - #2 Seed U-Fly (4-1) Vs. #3 Seed Bombers (4-1)
- 8:15pm - #1 Seed UOG Tritons (5-0) Vs. #5 Seed Umitde (2-4)
The championship and 3rd place matches are played on Sunday, October 13.
