In Memoriam: Judge John Sablan Unpingco
The University mouns the loss of former U.S. District Court Judge John Sablan Unpingco on October 11, 2023 at the age of 73.
His affiliation with the University of Guam began in 1976 as an instructor with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Judge Unpingco subsequently served as an Assistant Professor with the School of Business and Public Administration from 1995 to 2000 and returned as an Associate Professor with SBPA in August 2023.
Judge Unpingco taught generations of students in our University, and his legacy lives in the successes of our alumni who went on to serve in the local and federal governments as well as in the private sector in Guam, the rest of the Micronesia region and the nation.
President George H.W. Bush appointed the late John Unpingco as Chief Judge of the District Court in Guam in 1992. The late John Unpingco served 11 years with the federal court.
He was a U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General, and former Command Counsel, Naval Warfare Center, China Lake, California.
The late John Unpingco also served as former Administrator of the Guam Office of Veterans Affairs.
He received a Master of Laws degree, specializing in International Law, from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor from New York University, and Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude from St. Louis University in Missouri.
Rosary is being held at 5:30 p.m. from October 17 to October 24, followed by Mass at the Chapel of St. Therese, Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagåtna.
Last respects may be paid at 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on October 27, at the Chapel of St. Therese. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon, at the Cathedral-Basilica. Interment will follow immediately at Our Lady of Peace Memorial Gardens, Windward Hills, Yona.
The University keeps his wife Annie and the rest of the Sablan and Unpingco families in our prayers and offers our condolences to his bereaved loved ones.
