In Memoriam: Dr. Emerita Lorraine Yamashita
The University mourns the loss of Dr. Emerita Lorraine Yamashita on September 9, 2023, at the age of 89.
Both Dr. Lorraine Yamashita and her husband and first President of UOG, the late Dr. Antonio Yamashita are among the founders of the University of Guam, and their vision and contributions have established a lasting legacy of education in the region for the last 71 years.
She is the mother of Dr. Aline Yamashita, former senator in the Guam Legislature, former Associate Professor of Education at the School of Education, and former Program Coordinator at the UOG Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Education, Research, and Service, and Dr. Velma Yamashita, Director of Isla Center for the Arts and Associate Professor of Art in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She is the sister of Dr. Wilfred Leon Guerrero, President Emeritus.
Dr. Lorraine Yamashita is a Professor Emerita of Education, serving as Treasurer of the UOG Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars, and a member and co-chair of the Micronesian Area Research Center Advisory Association. She joined UOG in 1970 as an Assistant Professor, served as Chief of Extension Service from 1974 to 1978 and moved up the faculty ranks as Associate Professor and Full Professor. She retired from UOG in 1989.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Arts in Education from the University of Northern Colorado and earned a Doctor of Education in Leadership from Western Michigan University
Last respects will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Tamuning. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. followed by burial at Pigo Catholic Cemetery in Anigua.
