In Memoriam: Dr. Donald H. Rubinstein
Dr. Rubinstein is survived by his spouse Dr. Aaron S. Agsalud, a 2013 Bachelor of Science in Nursing alum at UOG. Dr. Agsalud also received his minor in Communication simultaneously with his BSN. He also holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice.
Dr. Rubinstein served the UOG Community for 34 years as a member of our faculty. He also served as the Director of the Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) from 1988 to 1991 and Faculty Senate President from 2005 to 2008.
Dr. Rubinstein earned his doctorate in anthropology from Stanford University and his master’s degree in public health from the University of Hawai`i.
He was a respected mentor and thesis advisor to countless students, and his decades of fieldwork throughout Micronesia informed his impressive body of published work which focused on social organization and social change in Micronesia, adolescent suicide, medical anthropology, and ethnographic art.
He served as Editor of Isla: Journal of Micronesian Studies, Chair of the Micronesian Studies Program, and Chair of the Guam Humanities Council.
His legacy will continue in the knowledge he imparted on our Tritons, his research and engagement with our communities as a scholar in Micronesia, and in his contributions in faculty shared governance at UOG.
A memorial service for Dr. Rubinstein will be held on Monday, October 30, 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m., CLASS Lecture Hall.
