The literary classic “Pride and Prejudice” romantic comedy, based on the novel by Jane Austen, will come alive at the University of Guam Fine Arts Theatre on April 20-22 and 27-29 at 7 p.m.
The latest production by the University of Guam Theatre is based on the novel’s adaptation for the stage by Kate Hamill.
Hamill's adaptation is undeniably fun, said the play’s Director Madison McKenzie Scott. Scott is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Division of Communication, Media & Fine Arts.
“She takes what Austen has given us already in terms of comedy and sharpens it for contemporary eyes and ears. It's full of really unexpected, relatable moments,” according to Scott. “Hamill also does a brilliant job of distilling Austen's observations about women in society – what is expected of them, what condemns them, what we are taught to value in them – and we see that, in some respects, not very much has changed since the early 1800s. When it comes to respecting the humanity and autonomy of women, Austen, Hamill and I have a lot to say.”
The cast and crew are UOG students, alumni, and community members. For students, the project offers an opportunity to engage in a variety of challenges, including comedy, period physicality and dance, period-specific design, accent work, and finding humanity within even the most archetypal of characters, according to Scott.
“It's full of challenges and also full of fun,” Scott said.
The main actors are: Ånna Prelosky as Lizzy Bennet; Nicolas Quinata as Mr. Darcy; A.U. Miranda as Mrs. Bennet; Derek Smith as Mr. Bennet; Hannah Elmore as Jane Bennet and Anne De Bourgh; Shannon Dean San Nicolas as Mary Bennet; Alexandra Castro as Lydia Bennet; Robbi Natividad as Mr. Bingley; Kayla Del Rosario as Ms. Bingley; Jeffrey Morales as Mr. Collins; Jauria Camacho as Charlotte Lucas; Mel Etumai as Mr. Wickham; and Athena C.G.
