Society of Emeritus Professors and Retired Scholars elects new leadership
Dr. Hiro Kurashina is the new President of the University of Guam Society of Emeritus Professors & Retired Scholars (SEPRS). Dr. Lawrence Kasperbauer is the Vice President and Dr. Kenneth L. Carriveau is the secretary and treasurer.
SEPRS, which held its annual election at its spring general membership meeting on
March 14, is comprised of retired faculty and scholars who support the University
through teaching, research, and public service, and promote its growth. Over 50 active
members participate in SEPRS activities.
Dr. Kurashina is a paleoanthropologist and Old-World Pre-historian who trained at
the University of California, Berkeley. From the 1980s to the early 2000s, Dr. Kurashina
served as a UOG faculty member, Acting Director of MARC, Director of MARC, and Acting
Dean of the UOG Graduate School & Research. He is the emeritus director of MARC and
chairs the SEPRS Scholarship Committee, and recently coordinated the SEPRS Legacy
Project.
Dr. Kasperbauer is a former vice speaker and senator who was the Chairman of the Guam
Legislature’s Committee on Education.
He served on the National Council of State Legislature’s Education, Labor, Job Training,
and Committee on Aging.
A professor emeritus of sociology, Dr. Kasperbauer served as SEPRS President for nine
years and was an Acting Academic Vice President, Assistant Vice President, and Dean
of the College of Education at UOG.
Dr. Carriveau is the SEPRS office of Secretary/Treasurer and a professor emeritus
of library science. During his tenure at UOG, Dr. Carriveau served as Faculty Librarian,
Dean of Libraries, Director of MARC, institutional researcher, and accreditation liaison
officer. He has authored many print and digital publications. He volunteers as an
interim archivist and genealogist at MARC.
SEPRS also provides scholarships to UOG students and will hold its annual fundraiser
luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2023, in the Micronesia Ballroom of
