The Imperials basketball club handed the University of Guam Triton Men’s Basketball Team its first loss of the “Take It 2 the South” tournament on Tuesday night at the Talofofo Gym. With a short-handed team of only five players, Head Coach Dana Holmes and Assistant Coach Mike Cottrell stepped in and joined the team on the court.

The Tritons had a slow start to the game — only scoring after five minutes had passed in the first half. The team managed to stay close to the Imperials during the first 20 minutes, but the gap widened to 32-21 by halftime.

The Imperials continued their strong performance and pulled further away in the second half to win with a final score of 76-53.

In his first game playing for the Tritons, University of Guam junior Diane’ “D” Blackmon led the Tritons with 17 points, scoring four in the first half and 15 in the second half. Coach Holmes joined Blackmon as the only other double-digit scorer for UOG with 17 points.

For the Imperials, Chris Conner topped the team with 36 points and six three-pointers. Three former Tritons were on the Imperials’ roster: A.J. Carlos, Dezdin Fikes, and Raffy Sablan.

UOG will play again at 8 p.m. tonight in an elimination game against team Pudding. Tonight’s game will determine which team advances to the next match on Tuesday. The Triton games are recorded and posted on the Triton Athletics YouTube channel.
