UOG custodians and maintenance staff earn trades certifications
Nine custodians and maintenance staff under the University of Guam Facilities Management & Services department earned a trades certification through the GCA Trades Academy on Feb. 25, 2022. One year into the broader trades program, these employees now have a basic certification in their trade and can fill needed roles for skilled workers at the University.
“We were having difficulty recruiting people for some our needed skilled maintenance positions and decided we can easily grow these skilled workers from within,” said Randy Wiegand, vice president of administration and finance and chief business officer with oversight of the FMS department.
The employees will continue at the Trades Academy for several more years to learn additional trades and eventually earning a journeyman qualification.
“When the program is completed, they will be eligible for all positions within the trades,” Wiegand said.
