UOG co-ed basketball team starts strong with two wins
The University of Guam Recreation Department launched its first-ever co-ed club basketball team at the “Love and Basketball” Tournament sponsored by the MicroFriends basketball organization. The Tridents club team had a successful start with two wins on Sunday at the Vicente S.A. Benavente Middle School Gym.
The tournament required teams to have three male players and two female players on the court at all times. Male players could not play defense against female players outside the three-point line but could guard females inside the three-point circle.
The Tridents defeated the Imperials in their first game 59-43 and pulled an upset in their second game by defeating the experienced Acdavate team, 55-52.
Ike Solomon scored 21 points for the Tridents in the opening game, with CJ Lukan adding 12 points and Ian Goodall contributing 10 points to give UOG a 16-point victory. Harold Matts led the Imperials with 15 points.
The second game against Team Acdavate was a close battle, with each team taking a solid lead at times and the other team coming back to even the score. UOG had the final surge late in the second half and held off Team Acdavate for the win. Solomon again led the UOG attack with 12 points. Kyle Gilinug added 11 points, and Dichem Tmetuchl scored six points for the Tridents.
UOG is the number one seed with the two wins and automatically goes to the championship game next Sunday. The Tridents will play the winner of the Imperials and Acdavate game. The game time is to be announced.
All UOG games are recorded and posted on the Triton Athletics YouTube channel.
