Six students inducted into UOG’s new sociology honor society chapter
A chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, an international sociology honor society, has been established at the University of Guam under the Sociology Program, and with it came the recent induction of its first six student members.
“This is very historic for our program and wonderful news for our University to have a chapter of this prestigious honor society established here,” said Professor of Sociology Kirk Johnson.
The Alpha Kappa Delta honor society, founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California, seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in the study of social problems, sociology, and intellectual activities that lead to improvement in the human condition.
Induction into the society is a lifetime membership and presents students opportunities to receive travel grants to present at sociological meetings, receive mentorship with professionals, attend an undergraduate research symposium, and compete in a student paper competition.
“Sociology is mainly about making positive change in the world,” said inductee Rochelle Alviz, a junior psychology and sociology major.
In being a new member of Alpha Kappa Delta, she said, “I look forward to learning more about social change — what we can do — and just getting experience in the field of sociology outside of school-related activities.”
