November sessions available for dementia caregiving
The University of Guam’s Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program is offering November online sessions related to caregiving for people with dementia.
CARES Dementia Advanced Care – Module 4: Minimizing Falls
Two sessions will focus on “Minimizing Falls,” which is one of six modules under CARES, a nationally recognized set of programs to improve dementia-care skills. These will be held:
Advance care planning
Kelly Neil, a family nurse practitioner, will present “Advance Care Planning.” The session will be held:
This presentation will highlight medical documents associated with end-of-life care, including the Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). The presentation will also address legal documents associated with end-of-life care such as living wills and durable powers of attorney for health care. Neil is a family nurse practitioner residing in San Diego, California. Previously, she was one of the site program coordinators of the Medicare program at American Medical Center in Guam.

Two sessions on “Rethinking Wandering,” also part of the CARES program, will be held:
Memory: The Power of Reminiscing
Veronica Alave, a registered nurse, and Fredlynrose Lumogda, also a nurse with the UOG School of Health’s Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program will offer two sessions on “Memory: The Power of Reminiscing.”
This presentation will highlight a variety of ways to maintain memory health, including several fun memory-boosting games. Participants will also receive a free copy of the UOG School of Health’s recent book “Guåhan Memories: Images and Conversation Starters for Adults with Memory Loss.” Sessions will be held:

The training program and presentations are part of the ongoing online support groups for family caregivers of persons with dementia being conducted Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program of the UOG School of Health. The support group sessions are held on Zoom every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning year-round. The sessions are free of charge to partners, family members, and other caregivers of persons with dementia who have ties to Guam and the Micronesian region.
