UOG basketball teams both 1-1 heading into final tourney games
The University of Guam Triton Men’s Basketball Team and Tridents co-ed basketball
club team dropped their games on Wednesday at the “Take It 2 the South Part 2” tournament
held at the Talofofo Gym. Team Wu Tang defeated the Tritons in the men’s division,
and the Tridents lost to the Imperials in the co-ed division.
After two tournament losses, UOG made a comeback last night with the Tridents defeating
the MicroFriends basketball club 59-52 in an elimination match.
After an 18-point victory Tuesday night, the Tritons couldn’t secure another win and were defeated by Team Wu Tang 63-60. UOG led four to five points early in the game, but Team Wu Tang came back and evened the score to 11-11 after the first quarter. Wu Tang controlled the rest of the first period and led 35-28 at halftime.
Team Wu Tang maintained control throughout the second half and managed a 12-point lead with 14 minutes remaining on the clock. Refusing to give up, the Tritons picked up the pace and started to rally. UOG closed the gap to five points in the final minutes but could not overcome Team Wu Tang and lost 63-60.
Leading the Tritons in scoring were Tristan Valdes with 18 points, Diane’ “D” Blackmon with 15, and Daryl Robles with 14. The Tritons have a 1-1 record and will play in an elimination game against Team Humble at 6 p.m. on March 1 at the Talofofo Gym.
The Tridents opened the co-ed division of the tournament with a match against the Imperials co-ed team. Although the Tridents defeated them in the “Love and Basketball” tournament, they struggled with their offense this time around and lost 60-51.
After falling behind the Imperials 18-10 in the first half, the Tridents came back and tied the game 25-25 at halftime. The Imperials lit up the scoreboard in the second half —gaining an 11-point lead over the Tridents. UOG couldn’t make a run in the final 10 minutes of the game and lost 60-51.
Ike Solomon led the Tridents with 10 points and was the only player to score double digits.
After losing to the Imperials, the Tridents made a comeback Thursday night in an elimination match against the MicroFriends basketball club. The Tridents brought more energy to the court and defeated MicroFriends 59-52.
The score was tied for the first 10 minutes until UOG broke away and secured a five to seven-point lead for most of the first half. MicroFriends made a couple of runs in the second half but never closed the gap to less than three points. The Tridents maintained their momentum and led by seven to 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Ian Goodall led the Tridents with 14 points and was the only player from UOG to score double digits. Jacether Andrew added nine points and broke a team record as the highest-scoring female in a game this season.
The Tridents have a 1-1 record and will play against Team Acdavate in an elimination game at 9 p.m. on March 1 at the Talofofo Gym.
