Accounting major Jamabeva Masangkay was one of 70 students selected across the nation to attend the 2021 AICPA Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop — an all-expenses-paid program for ethnic minority students pursuing careers in accounting.

The three-day workshop, which took place in October, was designed to help students strengthen their professional skills and gain an understanding of the possibilities and benefits of earning the Certified Public Accountant credential. Masangkay said she applied for the workshop to learn more about the accounting industry and what it means to be a professional leader beyond the walls of a classroom.

“I wanted to better understand what a future career in accounting looked like by listening to the stories of real professionals from all over the country,” she said. “We had the opportunity to interact with seasoned professionals who provided us with valuable knowledge of career opportunities and networking, told through the lens of their personal and professional experiences.”

While the workshop was scheduled to be held in New Orleans, the pandemic moved this year’s program to a virtual setting. The students participated in learning sessions and panel discussions centered on professional development and the CPA exam.

“Although it was held online, it felt just as alive as though it was in person. The panelists and speakers were packed with enthusiasm, charisma, and passion for the future generation of accounting,” Masangkay said. “I highly recommend this workshop to any accounting student who wants additional insights into the world of accounting.”

Masangkay said the workshop inspired her to pursue a career in public accounting and prioritize the CPA exam. She plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from UOG’s School of Business and Public Administration.
