Calvo Field House to open Athletics Hall of Fame room

The Triton Athletics Hall of Fame and Field House at the University of Guam will continue to build and memorialize UOG’s sports history with the opening of the Athletics Hall of Fall Conference Room on Monday, featuring memorabilia from the university’s past sports teams. 

Ceremony on Monday will include announcement of new Hall of Fame inductees 

Sports memorabilia from the University of Guam’s past will guide the next chapter of Triton Athletics history as it decorates a newly dedicated conference room in the Calvo Field House. The Triton Athletics Department and Field House will open the Athletics Hall of Fame Conference Room, located within the Triton Fitness Center, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday. 

“This is another proud moment in celebrating the history of the Triton Athletics program and building excitement for its bright future,” Athletics Director Doug Palmer said. 

The event is open to the public in person — with masks, temperature checks, hand and shoe sanitation, and sign-in required — or virtually on the Triton Athletics Facebook page and YouTube channel. 

The conference room, which can seat eight, features a TV monitor for presentations and virtual meetings, multiple lighting features, and drapes for sound buffering. 

The room is decorated with sports equipment and uniforms donated from members of Triton Athletics Hall of Fame, including a signed football from the 1974 team and a baseball signed by Japanese professional baseball player Sadaharu Oh, who holds the world record for home runs. The ball was originally given to UOG Hall of Famer David Nelson, who played baseball for the Tritons in 1979. 

In addition to Nelson, Hall of Fame members John and Susie Borden, Christobal M. Mesa, David Nelson, Susan Rechebong Luploa, and Helen Whippy (for James Whippy) made donations. 

The room is also filled with pictures that tell the Triton Athletics story from its beginnings up to its relaunch in 2016. 

Speaking at the event will be UOG President Thomas W. Krise, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Success Lawrence Camacho, Triton Athletics Hall of Famer Christobal M. Mesa, and UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer. 

Announcement of Hall of Fame 2020 and 2021 inductees

The ceremony will include the announcement of former UOG athletes to be inducted as the Class of 2020 and Class of 2021 into the Triton Athletics Hall of Fame. The announcement will be followed by a formal induction later this year during the annual UOG Hall of Fame Reception basketball game. 

With the two new classes, the Triton Athletics Hall of Fame will have a total of 35 members. 

The doors for the ceremony will open at 10 a.m. on Monday, and a short program will begin at 10:15 a.m. The public vaccination clinic will not be operating at the Calvo Field House that day. Following the event, the room can be viewed during regular Triton Fitness Center hours: weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. (but closing at 5 p.m. Fridays). 

The Triton Fitness Center and conference room can be accessed from the tennis court side of the Calvo Field House, with parking in the grass parking lot. The fitness room doors are in the middle of the building, marked by orange cones.
