The trailer will aid UOG Sea Grant’s education outreach group in bringing lessons on coastal and marine conservation to villages throughout the island.

“We want to bring the science from the university out to the community with this mobile outreach trailer,” Sustainability Coordinator Phillip Cruz said. “We plan to hold mobile classes to educate our people on marine sciences, preservation, and so much more.”

UOG Sea Grant Associate Director Fran Castro wrote the grant that allowed for the purchase and customization of the trailer.

“We are so excited that this trailer is ready. It is another way for us to reach out to members of the island who may not otherwise have access to these educational opportunities,” Castro said. “The outreach we will be able to perform with this trailer will benefit all our people — young and old.”
According to Cruz, UOG Sea Grant hopes to begin outreach opportunities using the trailer by the end of the year as public health and COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

UOG Sea Grant is one of 34 programs within the National Sea Grant College Program — a partnership among universities and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that seeks to enhance the practical use and conservation of coastal and marine resources to create a sustainable economy and environment.
