Press Release: Political Science Student Association hosts 2020 Senatorial Forum
The University of Guam’s Political Science Student Association will host the 2020 Meet the Candidates Senatorial Forum rom 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23, and 30. The forum will feature senatorial candidates live on Zoom and streamed to PSSA’s Facebook page.
PSSA is sponsoring the forum in hopes of giving the students of the University of Guam as well as members of the public the opportunity to learn more about Guam’s 2020 senatorial candidates. PSSA seeks to provide students and residents with the knowledge necessary to make well-informed decisions in the upcoming General Election.
“With this year’s unprecedented election season, PSSA’s sixth senatorial forum has been adapted to ensure our community’s access to important information about candidates, their perspectives, and their plans to address the needs of both our university and our island,” said Nolan Flores, president of PSSA.
The video series will consist of two rounds, with the first centering around UOG/student-specific topics. Candidates will be asked to address issues and share creative solutions related to reduced appropriations to UOG, financial burdens on students, job/career opportunities, and the university’s role in the community. The second round will consist of questions collected from students and the greater community related to general issues affecting the island. The audience will have an opportunity to pose questions to the candidates live on Zoom or on the Facebook livestream.
The schedule of candidates is as follows:
Although the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted this year’s election season, PSSA remains committed to promoting the study of government and politics, enhancing public awareness, and facilitating discussion about politics and issues of importance to the community. PSSA encourages students to explore the field of politics outside the classroom and acts as an outlet for students to expand their knowledge and skills, extend their networking boundaries, and increase their active involvement in public events. An integral part of PSSA’s mission is service to the island community, as service and involvement contribute to the formation of active and responsible citizens. PSSA is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
