The University of Guam mourns the loss of Dr. Roy T. Tsuda, who passed away on Dec. 7, 2020, at the age of 80. Tsuda was a professor emeritus of marine biology at the University of Guam and served and contributed to the University in many different capacities, including as vice president for academic affairs and interim president over the course of his 22-year career at UOG.

Tsuda joined UOG in 1967 as an instructor and was promoted throughout the faculty ranks as an assistant professor, associate professor, full professor in 1974. That same year he became the director of the Marine Laboratory, and while serving there became the first professor to be granted tenure by the UOG Board of Regents in 1977.

He went on to serve as the Sea Grant coordinator and the dean of the Graduate School and Research from 1978 to 1984. He also served as the vice president of academic affairs from 1984 to 1989 and concurrently served as interim president from 1987 to 1988 before retiring in 1989. Tsuda administered all graduate programs, coordinated research units at Micronesian Area Research Center, Marine Laboratory, and Water and Energy Research Institute and served as the East-West Center and Fulbright-Hays Program representative for Guam.

His connection to the University continued on in retirement. In 2000, Tsuda accepted an appointment from the Board of Regents to serve as interim president once again when he served from December 2000 to October 2001. He then continued his work with the Marine Lab as a researcher and consultant.

Tsuda had been as a research associate with Botany-Herbarium Pacificum, Department of Natural Sciences at Bishop Museum in Honolulu since 2004.

Tsuda's wife, Sally Tsuda, is a professor emeritus of nursing from UOG.
