Deadline extended for elementary art and writing contest

Finalists’ work to be published by UOG Press in social studies textbooks

Public elementary school students have until April 30 to enter their art and writing for a chance to be published in social studies textbooks being developed by the University of Guam Press and the Guam Department of Education. The deadline for the art and writing competition, launched in February, has been extended due to the closure of GDOE schools. UOG Press invites parents to engage their children in the contest at home and submit their work electronically.

The contest invites GDOE students from Kindergarten through fifth grade to create an original art piece, photograph, story, essay, or poem inspired by the question: “What makes our island home a special place to live, and what can we do to take better care of it?” Students are encouraged to use their creativity and talent to come up with something unique that features life in Guam or in the region. They can explore the different ways they help their families, schools, villages, and island.

Finalists will be selected from each grade level based on

  • Ideas: How does the image or writing answer the question in a creative way?
  • Representation: How does the work capture life on Guam or in the region?
  • Artistic skills: How do the elements in the art and writing work together?

Finalists will receive a small honorarium and a selection of books from UOG Press, and their work will be featured in the new social studies textbooks.

This art and writing contest will help to ensure that the voices and perspectives of Guam’s students are included and represented in the textbooks.

Email submissions to uogpress.textbooks@gmail.com by April 30.
