Father Dueñas, St. John’s take gold in UOG chemistry competition

Father Dueñas Memorial School and St. John’s School took the top awards in the 11th University of Guam Chemistry Titration Competition that was held at the UOG Charter Day festival on March 10. Students from St. Paul Christian School and Harvest Christian Academy also won awards. In total, 30 students from eight high schools competed.
Hosted by UOG Division of Natural Sciences and judged by UOG chemistry majors, the two-part competition required students to determine the concentration of a base and the mass of an acid through titration, or volume measurement. They were awarded points on accuracy and precision of their data.
The winners were:
Best Team 1st place: Brian Songco and Isaiah Alvendia, Father Dueñas Memorial School
2nd place: Grace Hutapea and Matthew Zhang, St. John’s School
3rd place: Nicole Jean Pineda and Jaimie Adrienne Paunte, St. Paul Christian School
Best Individual
1st place: Grace Hutapea, St. John’s School
2nd place: Brian Songco, Father Dueñas Memorial School
3rd place: Nicole Jean Pineda, St. Paul Christian School
Best Laboratory Skill 1st place: Chanyoung Lee, St. John’s School
2nd place: Megan Lopez, Harvest Christian Academy
3rd place: Brian Joseph, St. John’s School
The other participating high schools included John F. Kennedy, Academy of Our Lady of Guam, Notre Dame High School, and Guam High School.
