Elementary students: Enter art or writing for UOG Press contest

2/12/2020

Elementary students in Guam Department of Education schools are invited to enter their original artwork and writing for a chance to be published in new social studies textbooks. The textbooks are being published through a partnership between the University of Guam Press and GDOE. This art and writing contest will help to ensure that the voices and perspectives of Guam’s students are included and represented in the textbooks.

GDOE students in Kindergarten through fifth grade are being asked to submit an original art piece, photograph, story, essay, or poem inspired by the question: “What makes our island home a special place to live, and what can we do to take better care of it?” Students can explore the different ways they help their families, schools, villages, and island and are encouraged to use their creativity and talent to come up with something unique that features life in Guam or in the region.

Finalists will be selected from each grade level and will receive a small honorarium and a selection of books from UOG Press.

Submissions will be selected based on:
• Ideas: How does the image or writing answer the question in a creative way?
• Representation: How does the work capture life on Guam or in the region?
• Artistic skills: How do the elements in the art and writing work together?

The deadline to enter the contest is March 31. Submissions may be emailed to uogpress.textbooks@gmail.com or delivered to the UOG Press office on the second floor of the Micronesian Area Research Center on the UOG campus.

For more information about the contest or the textbook project, please email uogpress.textbooks@gmail.com or contact Monaeka Flores at (671) 735-2154.
