Henk Rogers, founder and CEO of Blue Planet Foundation, shares his journey in advocacy for ending the use of carbon-based fuels as the featured speaker of the second session of the University of Guam Virtual Conference Series on Island Sustainability on May 8.

The second week of the University of Guam Virtual Conference Series on Island Sustainability last Friday focused on renewable energy as Henk Rogers, founder and CEO of Blue Planet Foundation, engaged a virtual audience of about 500 viewers.

Rogers shared his journey in entrepreneurship and advocacy of ending the use of carbon-based fuel to save the planet from climate change destruction. One of his biggest successes was Hawaii’s passage of a law mandating 100% renewable energy by the year 2045. Hawaii was the first in the country to make this commitment and has since inspired other states and U.S. territories to create their own mandate, including Guam.

Sen. Amanda Shelton, author of Guam’s 100% renewable energy mandate (Public Law 35-46), and co-author Sen. Clynt Ridgell presented a legislative resolution to Rogers during the conference. Resolution 325-35 (COR) recognizes Rogers for his commitment to the mission of stewarding the environment, most notably through clean energy and commends him for his service as a global leader.

In turn, Rogers welcomed Guam as the newest member of the Blue Planet Alliance, Roger’s newest initiative that takes a “mandate first” approach to initiating global climate change action. He presented special Certificates of Commitment to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio, and the 35th Guam Legislature.

Since shifting to a virtual format in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the UOG Conference on Island Sustainability has attracted its biggest audience in the history of the event, now in its 11th year. The first two sessions garnered more than 500 direct participants over the live video conference, representing 61 countries, states, and territories. Both live broadcasts and repeated views of the sessions totaled over 4,200 views.

Registration remains open and free of charge for the ongoing conference series, taking place Fridays at 9 a.m. ChST. Register at www.uog.edu/cis2020.
