The University of Guam Triton Men’s Soccer Team lost 3-2 to the Islanders Football Club in the first game of the Guam Football Association’s Budweiser Soccer League Premier Division on Saturday night at the GFA National Training Center.
The Tritons showed their speed and breakaway potential in the first half as Ryoga Okada opened the scoring with a breakaway goal at the 15-minute mark.
The match was about even until Okada broke away from the Islander defense again and pushed another shot past the Islanders goalkeeper in the last two minutes of the half to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead at the break.
With Okada not feeling well at halftime and the UOG team not having any subs for the match, the Tritons focused less on pushing the ball forward and more on defending their goal. The Islanders responded by building their offensive numbers.
The Islanders scored their first goal 10 minutes into the second half, putting the ball in the net off of a UOG misplay on its defensive backline. The Islanders’ confidence grew with a second goal at the 65-minute mark leading to their third and final goal with about 10 minutes left in the match.
UOG stayed in defensive mode until it was too late to build any momentum on the offensive end of the field.
The nine-team Budweiser Soccer League will play through April. The Tritons have a bye in the schedule this Saturday and play again on Saturday, Nov. 2, against the Sidekicks Soccer Club at 8:30 p.m. at the GFA complex.
