Triton Men's Basketball opens season with 107-92 victory
The Triton Men’s Basketball League opened last night in the Calvo Field House with the University of Guam Triton Men’s Basketball Team taking a 107-92 victory over Team Wu-Tang. The game was the first-ever Triton basketball game to be broadcast live on television. Games throughout the season will be aired on PBS Guam, Channel 12.
The Tritons found Team Wu-Tang to be a solid opponent from the start as Wu-Tang and UOG battled back and forth early, leaving the Tritons down 19-12 after the first quarter.
But Tritons guard Logan Hopkins, who only had two points in the first quarter, started making shots and added 11 more points for the Tritons by halftime, helping UOG come within one point of the lead at 42-41.
In the third period, guard Michael Quan, a new player this season for the Tritons, earned the team another 11 points, placing UOG on top by two points entering the final period at 76-74.
The Tritons depth — 13 players to Wu-Tang’s six — started to take a toll on Team Wu-Tang in the final quarter. UOG outscored Wu-Tang 31 to 18 in the final 10 minutes securing a 107-92 win.
Eugene Ribin for Team Wu-Tang led all scorers with 36 points.
For the Tritons, Hopkins accumulated 32 points followed by Quan, who added 30 points. Guards Aaron Castro and Brandon Soriano added 10 points each for the Tritons.
In the opening game of the night, the KFC Andersen Bombers defeated the Four Stars 96-68.
